The next morning I drove back to Los Angeles with the memories of the old days flooding my mind. Sinatra loved sitting at the bar in the rear of the piano lounge or dining with eight of his buddies in the main room and would often pop in just to hang out. Everyone would nurse their drinks for hours in order to see the dignitaries leaving. The staff never really enjoyed when President’s would visit for dinner because the rest of the tables never turned.

Handsome, charming and full of great escapades, Brian regaled us with stories about the wild and crazy evenings at the restaurant and took us on a tour of the hidden basement wine cellar, not open to the public but used heavily in the past for dangerous liaisons. The best part of the evening were the long conversations with longtime (40 years) Maitre’d Brian Ellis. Mel Haber at his iconic restaurant Melvyn's in Palm Springs I followed the meal with my Father’s favorite dessert Cherries Jubilee, the flames illuminating the romantic chandelier filled room. I also ordered Steak Diane named after Sinatra, (although he often preferred Veal), the meal was lovingly prepared table side with Filet Mignon medallions covered in a red wine demi-glaze.

While a singer belted out Big Band classics at the adjacent piano lounge, I started out by ordering Sinatra’s favorite drink, a mix of four ice cubes, two fingers of Jack Daniel’s and a splash of water. John Travolta is a regular and was there a few days earlier. He is the perfect schmoozer and has become close friends to every famous face in the desert. He created the legendary restaurant while hosting numerous celebrities at the Inn. It was then purchased by dapper Brooklynite Melvyn Haber, white hair, dark tan and a radiant smile with perfectly tailored suits. She entertained everyone from Howard Hughes to Norman Vincent Peale. The Inn was built in the 1920’s for the heirs of the Pierce Arrow Automobile Company and later sold to Palm Springs pioneer Ruth Hardy. When JFK became President and decided to stay at Bing Crosby’s mountain estate instead of with Sinatra, Frank was so angry he converted to become a Republican. Frank had a plaque installed to honor the event. Kennedy spent two days at Frank’s place in 1960, sleeping in a guest room of the main house. The compound would become his personal sanctuary for a dozen years hosted everyone from Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor to Princess Grace. Sinatra hired architect Ross Patton in 1967 to custom-design the retreat to focus on privacy and entertaining. The driveway and garages accommodate 24 cars. The grounds also come with a music studio that doubles as a pool house, two saunas, an outdoor dance floor and a helipad. Its three houses include a total of eight bedrooms, 12 bathrooms and nine fireplaces.
